Discovery

Archaeological sites

Prehistoric sites of major importance can be discovered nearby, including the famous site of Filitosa as well as those of Cucuruzzu Or Cowria. Located 18 km from Propriano, the prehistoric site of Filitosa is considered the most important megalithic site in Corsica. The immobile warriors, called “Filitosa”, granite giants 3m high, watch over the place, witnesses to more than 8000 years of history. Note the presence of "torre", large circular towers, made of large blocks of stone weighing several tons, measuring 7m high, and whose origin could be one of the peoples of the Mediterranean region, the Shardanes warriors.

Alta Rocca land of lords

You will explore the hinterland of Corsica, deep, wild and preserved Corsica, those of the pastoral highlands. It is a region of dense chestnut, pine and beech forests, steep mountains, whose Bavella Needles (jagged rocks pointing towards the sky, and from the Bavella pass, there are several hiking trails accessible to all). Alta Rocca also preserves a rich archaeological heritage highlighted by the prehistoric site of Cucuruzzu and the Levie museum.

Thermal springs

The Caldanes Baths in Alta Rocca and the Baracci Baths in Olmeto: their hot sulphurous waters flow at 40°C and treat rheumatism, skin and respiratory tract conditions. These two sites were already exploited in Antiquity.

Sartène “the most Corsican of Corsican towns”

“Its appearance breathes war and vengeance,” wrote Paul Valery. The city was founded by the Genoese in the 16th century, and was the scene of bloody clashes between Genoese, Corsicans and Barbary Islanders. The Sartène museum is the most important museum of prehistory in Corsica. On Good Friday, the city is the scene of the traditional Catenacciu procession : an anonymous penitent, with chains on his feet, carrying a cross weighing more than thirty kilos, retraces the journey of Christ's passion. Unforgettable atmosphere of fervor and passion.

The lion of Roccapina

The turquoise-colored sea offers an unparalleled beach, where a sculpted stone lion keeps watch. A huge pink granite rock, eroded by water and sea spray, the Roccapina lion is a natural sculpture. Until the 17th century, Barbary pirates landed there before launching their raids inland. Legend has it that a powerful lord loved a young girl who rejected him. Desperate, he invoked Death which petrified him. The Saracens had nicknamed him out of fear the Lion of Roccapina.
